Masks: Fun and Functional

irina s gold maskFace masks used to be the skincare product that was tucked in your cabinet and pulled out once a week in hopes that it would zap your zits. In 2017 they are so much more. Not only do they penetrate into skin leaving you more radiant and moisturized than when you came, they also make for a great way to unwind and even make a cool selfie. With the countless options at Sephora and the new drugstore masks hitting shelves, it can be difficult to figure out which mask if best for you. Keep reading to find out which mask you should be investing in.

Clay

Clay masks are perfect for oily, acne prone skin because they pull dirt and grease out of the skin. Although clay masks are popular they are often misused.  Facialist Sharon McGlinchery advises against keeping a clay mask on until it gets dry and flaky.

“There are three phases of a clay mask,” McGlinchey explained. “There’s the damp phase where your skin drinks in the beneficial minerals from the outside. Then you have the start of the dry phase, which exercises your capillaries and stimulates blood flow as the mask cools and contracts. But then there’s the dry phase, which draws out moisture from the surface of your skin, causing dehydration and irritation.”

While wearing a face mask until your skin feels tights might feel as if you’ll get better results, you’re actually irritating and drying out the skin.  To keep battle blemishes and oiliness try this clay mask from Fresh.

Charcoal

Charcoal, like clay masks, are great for fighting acne. Activated charcoal draws out poison, bacteria, dirt, and chemicals from the surface of the skin. It’s also great for battling blackheads. This charcoal mask from Origins is perfect for clearing pores.

Black Tea

A black tea mask helps get rid of free radicals collected from day to day life and rejuvenate the skin. Black tea ferment, Kombucha, is an advanced antioxidant that prevents wrinkles and makes skin soft and smooth. These kinds of masks, which are infused with Vitamin C and E, are perfect for unwinding because they are low maintenance and  can be left on for a while.

Try Fresh’s Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask for intense moisture and a more contoured complexion.
