Get Well: Challenge Yourself To Be Filled Only With Good Things

“That’s how you can tell that you’re filling yourself with the wrong things. You use a lot of energy, and in the end, you feel emptier and less comfortable than ever.”-Glennon Doyle

I’ve always heard people say things like “protect your energy” or “stay away from bad vibes.” Even the Bible says “above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23). I assumed that protecting your energy was important because you could get hurt or upset, but I didn’t understand how even the most simple viewing could effect me and change my entire mood, outlook, and energy.

I remember when this concept became real to me. I was having a good day. The kind of day where you walk into Starbucks and there’s no line, get to work and park in your favorite spot and get a compliment from your boss. You know, the kind of day where everything seems to fall into place effortlessly. During the day a friend who I hadn’t seen in awhile asked me if I wanted to get coffee with her. I went full of energy and optimism only to leave an hour later feeling hollow and sad about something I couldn’t quite place. We didn’t talk about anything depressing, we didn’t argue, and we didn’t experience any unpleasant reactions from those around us. Despite all that, something was off.

These types of situations could happen with a friend, a job, a song, anything. Even the music you’re listening to could have a negative impact on your outlook. It doesn’t have to be blatantly negative to be draining in some way. Sometimes even surrounding yourself too often with a person who constantly thinks negative thoughts will become a draining situation once you take on their energy. You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with so make sure you are choosing your circle wisely.

I challenge you to examine your life and look to see which areas are draining you. Is there any aspect of your life that you feel empty every time you try to fill it? Could your social media feed be causing you to complain and feel inadequate? Take time to analyze everything you come in contact with and be brave enough to cut out whatever is no longer serving you. I decided to delete Instagram off of my phone so I don’t spend my days comparing myself to others. I have also started to examine my relationships and make note of how I feel after I spend time with people. It’s important to make sure that you’re living the most positive, full life that you can. Without that, you’ll never reach your full potential. Comment below which aspect of your life you think you could improve and the ways in which you fill yourself with goodness.
