It’s not easy to reach your full potential. It’s much easier to go with the flow and be like everyone else without ever stopping to consider what you want or where you want to go. Throughout our lives we end up throwing on masks and taking on the traits, interests, and beliefs of others instead of turning within ourselves and deciding what we want and who we are. Maybe you went to grad school because it’s what people do when you would have preferred to never crack open a textbook again. Or maybe you keep hitting the bars on Friday night when you’d much rather stay home and paint. Maybe you’re staying in a unsatisfying relationship because you have kids. Whatever it may be, chances are there’s something you’d like to change about your life but you haven’t because it’s not what people do.
When I’m feeling stuck or tempted to conform, these quotes remind me that true happiness will come from me staying true to myself:
“The real point of being alive is to evolve into the whole person you were intended to be.”
“You feel unsettled because you know you were meant for more.”
“I am under no obligation to make sense to you.”
“Which do you want- the pain of staying where you are or the pain of growth.”
““Self love means I have a relationship with myself built on trust and loyalty. I trust myself to have my own back, so my allegiance is to the voice within. I’ll abandon everyone else’s expectations of me before I’ll abandon myself. I’ll disappoint everyone else before I disappoint myself. I’ll forsake all others before I’ll forsake myself. Me and myself: we are till death do us part.”
There comes a point when you need to forget what others think and what’s considered normal and start to consult yourself. In the end, you’re the one who will have to live your life so you should live it for you.
