I’m not talented. I’m not knowledgeable. I don’t have time. So many other people are better at this than I am. What if they make fun of me? What if I’ll hurt those closest to me? What if I fail? Have you ever said anything like this to yourself? Has your self doubt ever talked you right out of the exact thing you wanted to do? Have you ever made excuse after excuse about why you can’t do something? Have you ever told yourself you’re just not capable and there’s too much to lose. Chances are, you have. I for sure have. Self doubt is powerful and paralyzing. It will keep you from doing the thing you dream about out of fear that failure and disappointment is inevitable. It doesn’t matter if your 16 or 60, you don’t have to live your life doubting yourself and assuming failure before you’ve even tried. If you want to get real about shifting your mindset and shutting out your self doubt you’ll need to:
Get real about your beliefs
Sometimes self doubt is so second nature that we aren’t even conscious that we’re doing it. We may even think that we’re doing ourselves a favor by eliminating all possibilities of failure. You might think “Stay in your comfort zone, it’s safe here. Consistency and predictability is good.” While it may feel soothing to play it safe, no real growth happens there. No one has ever excelled at anything while staying cozy in their comfort zone. If you want to stop doubting yourself you’re going to have to get real about your beliefs. Here’s what I mean. We all have beliefs that are guiding our lives, some beliefs we may not even be aware of. It could be the belief that you’re not as naturally talented as certain person or that no one like you has ever accomplished this crazy goal, so how could you? These beliefs are limiting and as long as you’re believing them, whether consciously or subconsciously, you’ll never achieve anything big in your life. If you want to change your beliefs you need to know what they are. Really write down and ask yourself what you believe about yourself, your abilities, your world, etc.
Change the story
Once you discover your limiting beliefs you’ll be able to change the story you have about yourself. Maybe you’ve just discovered that deep down you believe that you’ll never mount to anything because nobody in your family ever has. Or you believe that you’ll never land your dream job because you’re not as talented as other applicants. If you go in with that attitude and get comfortable behaving like someone who’ll never mount to anything or land their dream job, you won’t. In order to achieve your goals you have to believe that they’re possible and that you’re deserving of them. Our behaviors are controlled by our beliefs so if you’re allowing yourself to believe that you can’t do something your brain will act in a way to prove that belief to be true.
What you believe about yourself and your situation matters. As humans, we’ll always reach our standard, so make sure to set your standards high. Your beliefs will guide you throughout your life with every single action you make, big and small alike. If you want to achieve your goals you have to get real about what your beliefs are and flip the script about your negative, self limiting beliefs. Take time to write out your negative beliefs about yourself. Once you’ve gotten real about what those are, cross them out and rewrite your new, healthy belief. Repeat this belief everyday and look for evidence of it being true. Do this until you truly believe it.
Changing your inner dialogue is no easy feat. However, it is the thing standing between you and your goals so it’s worth making sure that it’s working in your favor. Comment below what you’d like to change your beliefs to.
