This Is The First Step Of An Intentional Year

This time of year I always hear people saying things like “I hope this year will be good” or “let’s hope this year will be better than last year.” Upon first hearing this you may think, what’s wrong with saying that? They’re just wishing for good experiences. If you listen closely, you will find that “hoping” and “wishing” in this context is pretty negative. It makes it seem as if your life is like a paper bag in the wind, going wherever it is blown next. You want to know how to have a great year? Make a great year! It is in your control. You don’t have to wait for everything around you to come together, you can make them come together.

Last week I listened to Rachel Hollis on Lewis Howes’ podcast The School of Greatness, when Hollis listed her three mantras. One of them is “you are in control of what happens next.” I find this to be so powerful because so often we fall into the trap of thinking that life just happens to us. We end up leaving mediocre lives because we don’t recognize our ability to go out and make things happen! No one is going to be there holding the spoon to your mouth, if you are not happy or are wishing for something to happen, you need to go out there and make it happen.

Life is too short to wait around and hope that things work out. One of my fears is waking up at 90 years old and realizing that my life could have been different if only I had allowed myself to live the life that I want. 2020 brought me a lot of change, growth, and discovery. My 2021 intention is to continue growing and to take large steps in the direction of my dreams. While we are all familiar with the idea of New Year resolutions, I cannot stress enough the importance of making your resolutions visual. Write them down, envision them, do whatever you can to feel yourself already having what you want. This will raise your standard and force you to do whatever you can to be in the place that you have envisioned. Get real about your goals and figure out ways to make them a reality. It might mean seeking out a therapist so you can get over your emotional blocks, or maybe it will mean working up the nerve to quit your job and follow your passion. You cannot just sit there and wish anything for 2021. Wishing won’t change anything, only action will.

No matter what your 2021 goals are, know that anything you want is possible to achieve. You have the power to write this next chapter of your life. Create something that is beautiful and perfectly catered to you. Pick up the pen and get writing.

Let’s grow together.
