How To Create A Meditation Space In Your Home

We all know and relate to the saying “home is where the heart is.” For so many of us, home is the place where we feel like our truest self, it is where we live, love, unwind, and destress. Now that so many of us are working from home, home is also the place where we rush to make deadlines, get yelled at by our boss, and consume daunting media. During times like this “home sweet home” just does not feel quite as sweet as it used to. This partly has to do with the fact that humans were not created to be home for months on end, and with the fact that while most of us have been home we have not done a terrific job at separating work and home. If you are anything like me, you probably struggle with creating and following boundaries for consuming media. All these factors contribute to your home feeling more like a stressful place, than a sanctuary. If you want to successfully work in the same place as you lounge, you will need to be a little more intentional about how and where you spend your time. I have found that creating a designated meditation zone helps me to unwind and separate work from home. If you are unfamiliar with mediation, I recommend trying it. Meditation is an amazing practice, with endless health benefits, that deserves a spot in your daily routine.

Choose A Spot

This may seem like a no-brainer but if you want to create a meditation space you need to pick the perfect spot. Choose somewhere that is not plagued with noise and distraction. This could be your bedroom, basement, bathtub, closet, anywhere! Just make sure it’s an area that you don’t work in. Make this your go-to zen place so that you whenever you are in that spot, no matter the mood you are in, your mind will know that now it is relaxation time. Have this be a quiet space that other people will not use. It should be personal and intimate, just for you. If you have live in a smaller space, consider using a corner of your bedroom. You may have to rearrange your furniture a bit, but that’s okay! You could do this by moving your dresser and creating a little nook for yourself that contains your most peaceful and relaxing items. Nature is extremely calming so if you have a window it may be best to perk yourself right next to it.

Create The Atmosphere

This is the fun part, now is the time to make the space your own. You can add plants, flowers, photos, pillows, and any of your favorite things. Add whatever makes you feel the most relaxed and happy. I like having a various crystals and a blanket so I can get comfortable and feel positive. You want to feel cozy, calm, and centered in this space. I always like keeping a notebook nearby so that if inspiration sparks I am ready for it. You would be surprised how much your creative juices start flowing when you are in a zen state of mind. If you do not know where to start, I recommend picking a corner of your room, one preferably by a window, and add a rug, a couple pillows, and a plant. It always feels good to bring the outdoors in.

Aromatherapy will enhance both your physical and emotional health, which is what makes it the perfect addition to your meditation space. You can use essential oil, candles, incense, or a diffuser. I love using my oil diffuser with lavender and eucalyptus oil. It makes me feel like I’m at a spa. You can also use dried versions of lavender or eucalyptus so that you can have it double as decor. Not only do they look beautiful and calming, but they also have a therapeutic scent and are low maintenance. Keep a couple different scents on hand so that you can cater to your mood as if fluctuates.

Having a meditation space in your home will help you to unwind and better deal with stressful situations. It is most effective to spend some time there every morning before you start your day and at night before it is time for bed. Practicing daily meditation reduces stress, enhances self awareness, controls anxiety, and lengthens you attention span. Having a designated place for it will help you to focus faster and unwind more easily.
