5 Habits For A Healthy Morning Routine

Mornings are such a precious time of the day. I love how peaceful and quaint mornings. There is something effortlessly beautiful about slowly cracking your eyes open and seeing the sun slowly rise and stream through the windows. Not only are mornings beautiful, but they are also a a very crucial time of day. The morning sets the tone for the remainder of the day, either leading to positive habits or harmful ones. Starting your morning in a peaceful and productive way will allow you to adopt healthy habits throughout the rest of your waking hours.

If you are new to morning routines, it may feel overwhelming to suddenly implement a 5 step, productive process after you open your eyes. You are not zoomed if you struggle with structure. Instead, you may just need to adjust a couple habits. If you struggle with structure, it is important to have a kick-off step that will make it easy for you to follow through with the remainder of your routine. For example, it you find that you feel sluggish in the morning and do not feel like journaling, try waking up an hour earlier than usual. I find that when I wake up early I feel refreshed am much more motivated to journal. Once I have finished journaling my body craves exercise. This one act of waking up early leads me to easily completing more healthy habits. If you would like to create a healthy morning routine, start by implementing these habits in the morning:

Wake up without an alarm clock

Alarm clocks clearly have many benefits, however they cause you to wake up in more aggressive and startling manner. As you can imagine, waking up to a blaring sound puts your body through stress. The best way for the body to wake is naturally. If you train your body to wake up on time on it’s own, you can ditch your blazing alarm and wake up at peace. Try heading to bed earlier than usual, so your body will naturally rise earlier.

Write down dreams and gratitude

Writing down your dreams is a helpful tip I learned from a friend. He shared that each morning he writes down his dreams as soon as he wakes up because he believes that the key to solving his anxieties and promoting personal development lays in his dreams. I started implementing this and I find it to be very interesting and helpful. I believe that dreams give an inside look into the subconscious parts of our brain and can teach us about our fears, anxieties, and insecurities. Dreams are fleeting so if you want to remember them it is important to jot down the details as soon as you wake up. I find that grabbing my dream journal allows me to start my day in a more real and conscious way. This step allows me to exercise my mind in such a healthy manner. I have been doing this for a little over a week now and I am able to see patterns in the storylines of my dreams. These patterns are helping me to see which parts of my life I would like to adjust.

Meditate

Meditation in the morning is great because it promotes a clear mind and a feeling of being centered. It is remarkably easy to forgot to live in the moment. Mindfulness allows you to come back to the present moment and focus on the sound, smells, and sensations in you, and around you. Practicing mindfulness promotes peace and wellness, while reducing anxiety and depression. Think about it, most of the things we worry about are things that we have not even actually experienced. We spend so much time worrying about the future when we could be in the present moment where everything is safe and sound. Meditating in the morning will help you to spend the remainder of the day in a more present and aware state of mind. From this state, you can make healthier, and more rational choices.

Stretch

I love stretching in the morning because it gently wake me up by getting my blood flowing. You do not have to do anything too rigorous in order to wake your body up. A light stretch after getting out of bed is enough to give yourself a little boost of energy. I like to stretch for around 5 minutes and I normally follow the Mady Morrison 15 Minute Full Body Stretch Routine For Flexibility, Mobility, & Relaxation on Youtube. I love doing this routine in the morning because throughout the night my body gets stiff and this helps me to open up again.

Drink water

Drinking water in the morning is a classic and often talked about healthy habit. This is because it truly does wonders for the body. Drinking water has countless benefits including:

  • carrying nutrients and oxygen to your cells
  • flushing bacteria from the body
  • normalizing blood pressure
  • stabilizing the heartbeat
  • cushioning joints
  • protecting organs and tissues

I find that when I start my day with a glass of water I have a lot more energy and feel more awake. I prefer to drink hot water with lemon because I find it really flushes out my system and makes me feel light. Lately I have been adding chlorophyll to my water because it is said to have many health benefits, including absorbing toxins and detoxing the body.

Mornings are the root of the day and should be approached with intention. Although it may seem small, these intentions can make a major difference in the outcome of your day, and therefore your life. What intentional steps do you take to improve your morning? Which habits could you add to make it even better?

Let’s grow together.

  1. I totally agree about the alarm clock! such a game changer. another thing is there are many products that are like alarm clocks that produce light and will slowly get brighter mimicking the sun to bring you out of sleep without disturbing your rem cycle
