Fast food, fast fashion, fast pick ups and deliveries, no one wants anything if they can’t have it quickly. We want what we what we want and we want it 5 minutes ago. These days, days no one wants to work for anything. No one would ever try to sell something to you saying that consistency is key or “slow and steady wins the race.” We live in extremely fast paced times, especially if you are with me here on the East Coast. Being home during the pandemic kicked me off the axis and drilled into me that consistency really is key. If you want to get good at something, you need to practice it. If you want to see results you need to be patient. This relates to everything from growing a flourishing plant to starting a flourishing business. I once saw a quote that went along the lines of “there are people less qualified than you doing the things you want to do simply because they went for it.” That hit me so close to home because it reminded me that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to as long as I keep in mind that good things take time and consistency is key. The desire to quickly achieve your goals will lead you down a path of destruction that is paved with short-lived experiences and premature endings. Stay the course and see how far you can go once you become more focused on the end result, instead of rushing the journey. Slowing down my be difficult at first. If you would like to cultivate a more slow paced lifestyle, then meditation deserves a place in your mindful morning routine. Instead of starting your morning scrolling through social media and checking emails, try doing a meditation. There are no rules when it comes to meditation. You can lay down or sit comfortably on the floor with your legs crossed. Sit upright and concentrate on your breathing and the movement and feeling in your body. Take a moment to sense the feelings in your body and locate your breath. If you have thoughts, don’t dwell on it and beat yourself up. Let the thoughts come in and accept them, before letting them pass and continuing to focus on your body. I recently started doing Melissa Wood Health’s meditation on Youtube and I find it to be very calming. I also use the Waking Up app and I really love it. Doing guided meditations on an app is great because it keep your organized and helps you to track your progress. Staying Off Social Media
Social media is filled with hundreds of thousands of vibrant, exciting, and posed images from eager people searching for likes and affirmation. When you are logged on for hours throughout the day you become preoccupied with various insignificant texts and images. Social media hooks you and makes you want to continue scrolling for hours looking at other people’s lives and consuming many images that are irrelevant to your life. Free yourself from the distracting images by staying off the app and focusing on yourself and your own life.
Remember when you would read chapters of a book at a time without stopping to check your phone or turn on the TV? Yeah, me neither! Social media has effectively ruined attention spans, making it harder to stay focused for long periods of time. Train your brain to focus and be centered by resisting social media and picking up a book instead. Start small by committing to read one chapter uninterrupted. Once you start to stop multitasking you will find that you will be able to bring your brain back to that more focused and disciplined place it once was.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is slow down. You don’t need to be do a million things at once, in fact you should not. Protect your body and mind by taking time to move slowly and really enjoy your life for what it is. Some of the best things in life take time.
