I Tried The New Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oat milk Shaken Espresso. Here’s What I Thought

Good news for oat milk lovers- Starbucks now offers the dairy alternative! Oat milk is my go-to so I was especially excited to hear about this news. In recent years oat milks popularity as surged due to its milk-like taste and consistency. It pairs wonderfully with in coffee drinks and food dishes alike. On the same day Starbucks added oat milk as a permanent staple to their menu, the coffee retailer also added a couple new beverages. The Iced Brown Sugar Oat milk Shaken Espresso, Iced Chocolate Almond milk Shake, and Iced Pineapple Matcha Drink are among the new drinks you can try. These new menu additions have proven to be appealing to the growing number of plant-based customers.

I never shy away from a new Starbucks beverage and I have been waiting (impatiently) for the retailer to add oat milk to their menu for ages, so as soon as I could, I headed over to my local Starbucks to try the new Iced Brown Sugar Oat milk Shaken Espresso. Because I am a Starbucks Gold Member, I decided to check out the drink on my Starbucks app before ordering. A grande (medium) size of this drink contains:

  • Regular splash of OATLY Oat milk
  • 3 espresso shots
  • 4 pumps brown sugar syrup
  • Regular Cinnamon powder (as a topping)

Nutritional Information:

  • 16 fl oz
  • Calories: 120
  • Total fat: 3g
  • Total Carbohydrate: 20g

Compared to many of the other drinks on the menu, this beverage is less fattening. The main factor that sparked my interest (aside from the oat milk) was the brown sugar and the fact that it is a shaken espresso. I normally go for a vanilla latte or my all time Fall time favorite, the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, so I was intrigued by this flavor.

Upon first sip, the taste of cinnamon was clear. If cinnamon is your thing, I imagine that you will be a fan. The brown sugar taste is not overpowering, and I find that it tastes more like a blonde roast coffee with cinnamon on top. I am not a huge fan of this drink, but I definitely think it serves a purpose. If you are craving a drink that is light and not too overpowering, you’ll love this. It has a very light and easy taste. It is something you can sip on without noticing the flavor much. If you were hoping for something more thick and flavorful, I would pass on this one. I am not sure that I would order this again but unlike the matcha doughnut from Dunkin Donuts, I can’t definitely say no. I could imagine this being very tasty on a hot summer day. Until then, I think I’ll stick with my vanilla latte and wish for the miracle that Starbucks will make the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew a year long staple.

I am so excited about the oat milk because it’s my favourite dairy alternative at the moment! I probably wouldn’t get this order though because I’m not a huge fan of cinnamon but I do want to try some other drinks with oat milk.

I’m excited to know that Starbucks is now offering oat milk. I don’t like almond milk so oat milk is the best alternative for me. I am not a fan of cinnamon drinks either. If it’s a hot drink I usually order a vanilla latte with soy milk or iced coffee I order Caramel Frappuccino. Thank you for this information, I will make sure to ask for oat milk next time!

A caramel Frappuccino sounds very good! I’m going to try that next. Oat milk pairs really well with vanilla!

Yes, it does! I buy oat milk coffee creamer for home use and it’s usually either vanilla flavored or caramel.
