All over social media, motivated Gen Z’s and Millennials are talking about “that girl.” For those of you who are not so social media savvy, you may be wondering who “that girl” is. This phase has been popularized recently and essentially describes a woman who is focused on upkeeping a healthy mind, body, and spirit. In the past few years, self care and personal development has become extremely trendy. Don’t get me wrong, this is great. Self care is essential for overall health and wellbeing. However, somewhere along the way, it seems like it has become more of a trend than an actual path to wellness and authentic living. When I watch “that girl” routines on Tik Tok I find that they seem to be more centered around aesthetics, fancy skincare, and a slim and trim body, than they are about a healthy state of mind. The initial focus on health and happiness seems to have faded and an “Instagrammable” lifestyle has taken it’s place. In your attempt to be “that girl,” don’t forget that when trends fade in and out of popularity, you will still be left with your mental health.
So, when we strip down all the egocentric elements of the trend, who is that girl, really?

“That Girl“
When I think of “that girl” what comes to mind is a woman who knows her worth. She is focused, goal oriented and does the right thing at the right time, despite how difficult it may be. She knows where she came from, where she’s going, and how she is going to get there. She does not allow for minor inconveniences or judgments of others to shake her confidence and throw her off her well manicured path. She trusts the process and enjoys the journey.
If you want to be “that girl,” it is going to take more than the occasional green juice and soul cycle 3 days a week. It is a mindset shift, it is dedication, it is perseverance. Simple mindset and habit changes can help you to achieve a balanced, focused, and healthy lifestyle.
Flow With Your Bodies Alarm Clock
To reach optimal physical performance, you will have to work with your body, not against it. Ayurveda teaches us that our body works differently depending on the season, time of day, and other external factors. By understanding your body more, you can use your body as a tool and work with it, instead of against it. This could mean taking an afternoon break between 2pm and 4pm, because that is what your body asks of you.

Add Fruits and Vegetables To Your Diet
You are only as strong as what you put in your body. These days, it is difficult to eat well. Yes, thanks to trendy, millennial business owners, there are Juice bars and vegan restaurants across the globe. Unfortunately, work and school schedules make it extremely difficult to eat at said restaurants, and much easier to hop on the Chipotle line during your afternoon lunch break. I know first hand that eating well is a journey. It can be expensive, time consuming and pretty boring at times. While this is true, food is fuel and medicine. It nourishes our bodies and plays a major role in how we live and perform every single day.
Have A Routine
A common trait that successful people have is sticking to a consistent routine. Structure and a bit of predictability allows for one to make strides and stay on a steady, focused path. Your routine could fill your entire day, or be something more simple like a morning routine that includes prayer, skincare, and breakfast. Your routine does not have to look like anyone else’s. When scrolling through Tik Tok, I see many “that girl” routines that consist of an expensive, 10 step skincare routine, a smoothie, Lululemon workout gear, Pilates, and the jotting thoughts in the Five Minute Journal. While that routine is both healthy and aesthetically pleasing, it does not work for everyone. It may not even be a sustainable routine for half the people posting it. Do what makes you feel happy and motivated, and forget all the fads.

Time Outdoors
Being connected to nature is a human need, that when fulfilled, will bring a sense of peace and balance. Doing what your body is designed to do is the most natural way to stay motivated and healthy. Take time during the day to go outside and enjoy the beauty and calmness of the outdoors. This could mean drinking your morning coffee outside or taking a 10 minute walk during your lunch break.
Being that girl (or guy!) is about so much more than physical appearance and material objects. It is a lifestyle and mindset shift. It is about doing your best and showing up intentionally and healthily in all that you do. How can you show up like that today?
