I recently had a change of heart. There was a concept I once stood by and now I am realizing that I may have been wrong the entire time. Crazy concept, right? A few months back, I was talking to my friend about the importance of being disciplined. I said that motivation is fleeting and burnout is indefinitely and the only way to be happy is stay disciplined and to keep going even if you do not feel like it. I always appreciated the quote “you won’t get very far if you only work on days when you feel good.” Sounds reasonable, right? Well, now I am having a bit of a change of heart. My friend reasoned that he believes that discipline is not the way to go, he said motivation is much more important and even went as far as to say that we should be motivated all the time. For so long I thought this was absolutely crazy. Be motivated all the time? Good luck with that, I thought. While I still do not necessarily believe that anyone can be motivated ALL the time, I have come around to that idea that perhaps our society pushes us to be disciplined to the point of having a mental breakdown quite often. To be clear, I do believe that being disciplined is an incredibly productive and powerful trait to have in your arsenal, it helps us to work towards on dreams. On the other hand I also believe that we are meant to actually enjoy the work that we do.

Check Yourself And Your Environment
As human beings, we are meant to feel balanced. Although anxiety and pressure has become increasingly commonplace in our society, it is important to remember that we were not designed for those emotions. Stress and anxiety, though it is common, breaks the body down because it is not our natural state of being. A complete and continual lack of motivation means something is off balance. This could be a disconnect in the work that you are doing or an issue in your personal life. Whatever it may be, I believe that the first step to understanding why you feel unmotivated, should be to check yourself and your environment for imbalances.
Find A Solution
While it may seem easy and justifiable to pick yourself up and suck it up, fixing the issue is much better than putting a bandaid over it. This means listening to your body when it is speaking to you and respecting yourself enough to actually take time to ensure that you are at peace. In order to find a solution you need to be mindful of yourself and your surroundings. Being in touch with yourself requires a level of honesty and observance.

Yeah, this is a pretty interesting topic, in that sometimes if you do the right thing, it doesn’t even feel like you need discipline. It’s a good one to think about. Thanks for this post!
